Parameter Speculations

Montclair Central Part Transect Parameters:

Note: These are to be tested, transformed, pushed, developed, argued, challenged, evolved. But this does not mean that we can fall back on what we know. Following this line from MSU to Central Park should be the catalyst to our thinking and making. Please adapt and develop your own versions. Let us add these to the site

Here is a short version:

1. Multi-Site

2. Relational & Non — Illusionistic

3. Time is the key material of our speculations and practices

4. System

5. Experiment (not communication)

6. Not about the maker/self & does not begin with an existing medium/discipline

7. Nature is an open system. The human is not separate but of this system.

Here is a more eelaborated version:

1. Multi-Site: The production of an intervention in a system (work of art) occurs at both multiple scales and multiple sites. Multiple scales: Any object/system has different properties and agency at differing scales. No one scale “is” that object or system. Multiple sites: Any intervention works across multiple sites: a location in the world (a site), photography, essay writing, gallery production — it cannot be reduced to anyone of these.

2. Relational & Non — Illusionistic: No pure or independent systems. Systems are open and relational. There is no need to imagine that one system can stand-in/replace another.

3. Time is the key material of our speculations and practices. Our practices (for this class) and not just about time and nature but also of time and nature. Time can be considered to be more than measurement. Qualitative time. Entropy, Emergence…

4. System: Things should be considered to be fields and processes: a (open) system

5. Experiment (not communication). To do more than illustrate/discuss/inform/communicate. To directly affect and effect systems/things…

6. Not about the maker/self & does not begin with an exisiting medium/discipline:

7. Nature is an open system. The human is not separate but of this system.
